Proper skin care after and between treatments is essential if you wish to enjoy maximum results. The following tips will ensure that you make the most of your laser hair removal treatment, while drastically reducing the chances of complications or discomfort following treatments.

What can my skin look like post treatment?

  • Mild Erythema: Redness, inflammation or a histamine response is normal. The area being treated will be red and bumpy after the treatment and should settle after 2-3days. Any trauma to the skin may react this way. Regular application of AHAVA Body lotion will accelerate recovery. Or alternatively, you can use ice several times a day till the redness and swelling completely disappears.
  • Perifollicular Oedema: The hair follicle may swell (tiny bumps around treatment area) as a result of the heat from the treatment. This is a mild side effect that is not only common but can take up to a few days to heal. Rubbing the area with an ice cube will soothe any irritation. If excessive swelling occurs a low strength cortisone cream is recommended. Dermaid can be purchased over the counter at any pharmacy.
  • Itchiness: A normal histamine response to the treatment and should settle 24-48 hours after treatment.

What should I do post treatment?

Apply a topical soothing gel/cream after every treatment. This speeds up skin recovery after treatment, reduces redness and inflammation. Clients must commit to wearing SPF30+ on the treatment area (if exposed to the sun) everyday otherwise they cannot be treated as they are at a higher risk of potential complications. AVOID excessive sun exposure. The area treated will be prone to sunburn and pigment change.

Your skin may feel slightly warm after treatment. Apply a cold ice pack for 10-15 minutes, when you get home. This will help accelerate your skin’s recovery time. Your skin may also be sensitive and pink for the next 2 hours (in some cases this may last up to 2 days). Use AHAVA Body Lotion to continue to soothe and calm the skin at home.

Do not wax or pluck or exfoliate the treatment area. Any exercise, hot showers or saunas that apply heat to the body or cause the body to generate excessive heat or perspire excessively. Avoid swimming in pools and spas before and after treatment. No tweezing, waxing or use of depilatory creams in between treatments.

Avoid taking hot baths. Luke warm or cooler is better. Avoid using strong scented lotions and exfoliating creams on treated area. Be gentle and avoid excessive rubbing. No fake tan applications for at least 48 hours. Do not rub the area post treatment in the shower, just pat dry.

DAY 1-14
Avoid any deep exfoliation treatments/creams containing chemical exfoliants, such as microdermabrasion, Retin-A or Glycolic Acid. Still wearing sunscreen I hope!

Hair that was deeper in the skin at the time of treatment will start to clear from the follicles. This may seem like stubble initially. It is normal for treated hairs to be slowly ejected from the hair shaft for 10-14 days after treatment. These hairs are NOT growing, but are simply being released from the shaft.
